AOA Sports Vision Mission Statement
The mission of the AOA SVS is to advance the quality and delivery of full scope optometric sports vision care; to promote sports vision education, eye injury prevention and research; and to evaluate, treat and enhance the vision of athletes.
The Sports Vision Section was created by the American Optometric Association in June of 1978.
The SVS is recognized by:
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM)
Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science
National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
Special Olympic International (SOI)
United States Olympic Committee (USOC)
Its purpose is to:
- promote, advance, and enhance the identity of optometry as the profession providing Sports Vision Care;
- promote visual fitness as an essential part of physical fitness in sports medicine;
- enhance the vision/eye care of the public served by optometric practices providing Sports Vision services;
- provide and promote education, research and screening programs in the area of Sports Vision;
- provide a source of information on the subject of Sports Vision to the profession and to the public; and
- provide a forum for AOA members having an interest in the Sports Vision area of optometry.
